Properties:
Hydrogen Peroxide is an oxidizing agent with
antiseptic, disinfectant, and deodorant properties. It
is used in dilute aqueous solutions for bleaching hair
and fabrics, and for disinfecting soft contact lenses.
Strong solution should not be applied to tissues
undiluted as may cause irritating burns. Hydrogen
peroxide must to injected or instilled into closed body
cavities from which released Oxygen cannot escape.
N.B.
Hydrogen peroxide solution (6 % 20-volume) is a clear
colorless liquid.
Adverse effect and precautions:
Strong solution hydrogen
peroxide produces irritation, burns, on the skin and
mucous membranes.
Effect on the eye: Hydrogen peroxide in a
concentration as low as 30 ppm. Causes damage to human
corneal epithelial cells.
Uses
and administration:
Hydrogen peroxide is an
oxidizing agent used as an antiseptic, disinfectant, and
deodorant; It has weak antibacterial activity and is
also effective against viruses, including HIV. It has
also a mild haemostatic action. Hydrogen peroxide
solution is used to clean wounds and ulcers in
concentrations of up to 6%. Hydrogen peroxide 3% is used
for disinfecting soft contact lenses. Hydrogen peroxide
eardrops have been used for the removal of wax.
